I know I missed a few, but I didn't want to bore you (no promises). I have really enjoyed living on my own! Yes, I had the odd fall, but I managed them well, met the nice neighbor's and I was Ok. I have progressed nicely. Even though most people don't have a team to keep them going, but the size of it has diminished. I'm now showering on my own, doing all the cooking, I stand and do all the dishes. I get around by taking the Handy Dart (Ok I've nick named it The not so Handy Dart!) Especially on Wed evening, I was going to physio, I was locking my door, heard the phone ring, returned to answer it and heard the driver on the machine, - he left. So after waiting 20 mins on hold and 1 hour for another bus. The next one parked in a mud puddle (oh ya it was greening the trees, so I got soaked.) because my power chair augured in and I was as green as any tree in BC's rain forest ok soaked to boot. But I made it and really enjoyed the hot shower afterward! aahh!
I passed taking the handicapped regular buses and I took the sky train. Ok, you don't think that is a big deal, but backing up while doing a parallel park and all the school age kids playing and laughing on their way home from private school, is a big deal!
I got treated like the princess that I am when Pat, Ann and Cathy came Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed. Well I sure ate like a princess and I drank glue-vine at the Christmas Fair. I have the mugs to prove it.
The good news is that they hooked me up with a guy who I encouraged up here. Ok he had his then GF or mother of his daughter, Norah now 8, which was his encouragement but I remember skiing some fine runs with him on the backside of Whistler (that was then, this is now) but tomorrow he is going to assist me while I attend my first HOT yoga class at his studio, it is not the back side but it will be a big challenge, and a good one!
Well since I moved into this apt at the beginning of Sept I was always told that the apt is under GF Strong's management and it is only for 6 months which ends at the end of Feb. So, ever since I moved in, I have been looking for something this good but under a bridge is starting to look not too bad! The good news is that I like living on my own and I do ok so finding something like this suits me fine. I like the False Creek Area or this area as it is central to transportation, biking trails or walking (when and if I can do it), banks, grocery stores, Starbucks or other good coffee hang outs. I'm predominantly looking for places that are priced according to your income (either BC Housing or co-ops) it is a challenge in a high priced city but now I am disadvantaged and old. I would look outside the city but my physiotherapists are pretty skilled and any help getting to recover, I'll take.
Ok I did the yoga and for the first time since the accident on Mon and I'm booked to keep trying it. Sue and I went back to the pool today, for the first time in a long time. I could really see my improvement, but I'm still not actually swimming but it was fun and i could see and feel my improvement.
Unfortunately my uncle Mike Lalor died this week. He had been pretty sick and at his age there wasn't an upside to dragging it on. But the good news is that a cousin of mine sent an email and I finally put 2+2 together and finally realized we were all family. Not me and him and me and her but all of us. Ok I'm a little slow but sad things are sometimes what is needed to bring the gang together.
I am on this difficult journey but I have tons of really good support! Great friends and family and a great team of professionals so I hope to keep blossoming, as I'm sure there is something deep and more meaningful for me to learn. So if you have a question or comment for me, my email is; peggylalor@gmail.com and I'll do my best to get back to you. Until next time, Be well!

Living Large Downtown Vancouver
October 2012 Blog - Blog #7
I'm late getting this out and I have no good excuse and that
is the truth! This fall I moved into my own apartment. I'm really enjoying it
as it is a one bedroom apartment with a nice deck in the centre of Vancouver. Thank
God not in Vancouver General Hospital but it is at the corner complete with a
Starbucks. I had several of my good girlfriends who have come and stayed on my
couch (Jacquie, Cindy and LB) and those weekends were fabulous! The visit from
Jacquie Barone who cashed in a bit of my fundraising account to treat me to one
of those new-fangled super charged blenders so I can join those people dining
on those green shit shakes! But Cindy would not be out done as she made
chocolate chip cookies and Lb & I went on a bike ride to Granville Island.
The cookies and green shit shakes are really tasty, easy to make and super
healthy.
I still feel like I am waking up and wondering why this happened to me. I haven't got a good answer yet but I'm sure there is a good reason for it even if it is to learn what many other people have had to go through and rise above. So what if my life has had all the good things and for sure you can't take the money with you so it's not about the person with the biggest and prettiest house wins. Or who skied the biggest mountain or who rode the biggest wave so what at the end will justify the effort or justify the gifts you've been given? I have been reading a book that my non-fiction book club read and now that the big election in the US is in full swing. I think it is not for Americans to vote for red party or blue party, but it is to think about what will give people (and the planet) the best life. If you'd like to check it out of your library ask for "The Price of Civilization by Jeffery Sachs" He really gives things for everyone to think about! I have lots of time and incentive to think about what is best for all.
Well, that is all I have but I am sure enjoying this new life (away from
Ponoka) I really do like the shakes and so does my body! I am getting slowly
better and so I'll never be as good an athlete as I was, I'll enjoy all I learn
to do. That's all I can write this Sunday so if you have something you'd like
to ask me , best in person via email peggylalor@ gmail.com or phone (warning on
the voice, but I'm working on it) Until next time...

I'm doing 4 or 5 days a week of Physiotherapy and seem to be doing quite well,
but that is me writing. I'm meeting many new people in my physiotherapy group who
have all different stories and they are all rising above it all.
I just returned from Thanksgiving at brother Tom's cabin in Kelowna. It was
really good and I could feel my improvement, which was nice. He finished the
master bath, so I was able to have a "real" shower although I'm able
to shower here too. His girlfriend Val, helped me a lot, and I appreciated it.

Summer 2012
We took the dog, for great morning walks and a trip to
the Toronto zoo to see the new lions. Then Jim drove me to Lindsay where we met
sister Jan for some time at the cottage on the lake.
The great thing was, I still had one trip left to the Gorge! Jacquie
and Pasquale gave me a ride down and a place to stay and great green shit shakes
to start everyday! Good and so healthy! The wheat grass shots (Ok, they
weren't as good as Pasquale's coffee.) Kasia had all the latest swim wear that
looked hot on her but I would look like I was trying to be young and I'd have to
have that forever flat stomach and great butt (sorry, no picture ;(. ) To say
that I slept around, would be true, but no sex. I stayed at Cathy and Rolph's
new house and we ate the fruit from the trees and her son Collin had a summer
job at Solstice Pizza making great dough and the odd pizza that we had to put
down.
What's a trip to the Gorge without a trip to Mosier's Thirsty Woman? I
went to Arlene's in Mosier and we got thirsty! So, after cruising the twin
tunnels on my new hot rod (recumbent bike with a newly installed battery pack) I
was able to ride my old path that I rode most days with my rollerblades we
made over for a delicious healthy meal and a fine brewed IPA or two. (Ar asked
me not to tell this, but it was too funny) When we got back to Arlene's house ,
she parked the car and assisted me walking. Well I know I threw my weight back
and she dropped me! Yes, she padded my fall but she left me on the drive way
while she went for help from the neighbor. I was fine but I never met Willis's
grandson before so I extended a hand from flat on the driveway and introduced my
self, "Hi, I'm Peggy". Needless to say, I had a great time at Arlene's,
complete with hot tubs, showers, Lampoei's Thai Food, tours of the fix ups she
and her workers have done on her rental house across the street. I moved but I
didn't leave Mosier as I went over to acupuncturist Susan's'. More green shit
but a free treatment and from cute son Charlie who is following in her shoes. I
rode from her place to thee Mosier Tunnels but eventually the battery charger
was not working and it lost some of its charm. We took in the "King of the hook
Contest" and Jacquie won! But was the queen, again. Well, I didn't want to wear
out my welcome so I headed back to Hood River to the lovely home of Kerri, tall
Kiefer and shorter Dad Kelly.
Kerri suited me up with lots of her clothing and I really liked her
new house where the old double wide used to be. Well why wouldn't I like her
place? I had her room & ensuite,- no complaints!
Then I moved to Cathy and Rolph's new house, sorry Collin whose room I
took. The yard was full of fruit trees, including a fig tree not to mention
the tasty cherries. Ok I won't bitch about the thick carpets that were hard to
negotiate in my wheel chair cause I'll be very happy if I'm invited back,
without the wheelchair, but it could be awhile, if ever.
Next, I moved up to Rick and Teresa's on the top of Burdoin Mtn.
Luckily it cooled off so I could use the hot tub and outdoor shower. But the
view and the big flat screen TV were on top of these fantastic hosts!
Rick took me down to meet up with Jacques who graciously had a great
send off with all my hosts, and then drove me to the train in Vancouver, WA. My
hosts packed me a delicious pack lunch and I took the train up to Camano Island
where Sue was spending the weekend at Gary's family's place.
Now it is Labour Day Weekend and I'm moving into a temporary apartment
in the heart of the city. Ok, it's hard to leave the great deal I have here at
Sue's (and the view, helpers like Katie and Max.) but hopefully Sue will still
be involved with my therapy, and more time to be my friend and guidance
counsellor with less driving. So next month will have significant changes for
me. So, if your in town (I have a spot for you to crash), and I'm over at
Laurel and Broadway by VGH looking for more company as I learn this city by bus.
There is much to learn as I transfer to this next phase.
There is much I left out but as you know I will continue to try and do what they say can't be done!
I don't know my new address but it is by Laurel and Broadway. My new
landline is 604-620-5852 so come on by let's have a party!

Bring on the Summer. I Am Here Yay!
Well, time is flying by, and the beginning of June means blog time and the
beginning of summer. Well the West Coast means mild winters and mild summers
but that is better than Ponoka and next weekend I'm heading down to the
Gorgeview B & B's annual Guac Off. Skip and Paula are going to drive the
rocketship and I will enjoy Cathy Carter's hospitality plus anyone else's. Last
year I was lucky enough that Craig Sabina came in his plane and flew me and
Cousin Jane (Ralph) but this year I will miss Ralph and the plane but it will be
nice to go and win the trophy again. Ok we'll toy with them!
Everyone has been asking when I'm moving, not least sister Sue cause she is trying to plan their family holidays. All I can say is that I'll go when they have a place. I'm not unhappy or uncomfortable where I am and I'll move when the situation is right. I hope Sue & family have the freedom they choose!
Well I did go to Hood River and won the trophy and have enclosed a picture of our "re-tire a guac" as Pat has finished his time at Dakine. Wow! so ends another era! The whole weekend in Hood River was great. Chuck Hinman gave me and Cathy a newly renovated room, which was really nice cause I even got spoiled with Mark DeResta's fabulous food in their restaurants, and their bathrooms were handicap accessible. Ok, a good hot tub but not to out do Ann & Pat as their's came with Pat's coffee! but the whole weekend was great! Cathy even managed to give me a keyboard for my IPad which I am using to type this using two hands, which is really good practice.
Well besides Hood River, I went to Kelowna to brother Tom's with sister Jan which was a good learning trip and my cousin Karen (Jane's sister) and husband Dave visited after their conference at the Fairmont Whistler. I took them for a little ride/run on the Seaview Trail which is a flat (rails to trails) good trail close by. I also had a visit and run/ride with that famous dentist from Calgary, not Litttle Dave but Sexy Dave, or Dave French. I learned it was demoralizing so, I'm sorry Dave!
I remembered my dream for the first time. My buddy Tree was in it, but he is in South America with his significant other and they are having their first child and he's putting out a blog which is mostly pictures so if a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll try.
I am getting better as I even get warm. But I will be able to handle Vancouver heat so bring it on! The start off the summer boating season began with "sail past" and I was invited on Laura's boyfriend's boat. Ok I wanted to moon the commodore but I showed maturity and restraint!
Anyway, I know that my sense of humour (as sick as it is) is fine! I do feel better but I know there is still a long way to go. So, stay tuned.
Things I need...friends who will meet me or take me for coffee or a hot tub or ride my bike (Seaview Trail or some place flat, like Stanley Park, Jericho beach or the like) A place to store bottles, so I don't have to ship them back to Calgary.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR
Another month zipped by... I have learned a lot from my physios and with Spring
on my door step the new recumbent bike I've purchased will be my new
transportation and entertainment. They won't have till mid July the battery
pack, so for now I'll just ride on the flats. (ok, I haven't found many) in
hilly West Vancouver, except the Seaview trail, which if I had the battery pack
I'd be able to ride to and from but for now, just getting out when I'm not just
sitting there is great. I'll go today plus I've been invited to the John Prine
concert which should be fun, as I listened to him, knew all the words of his
crazy songs when we were young and crazy teenagers skiing at our cottage, Sir
Sam's Inn in Haliburton.
I just booked my airline tickets to Ontario this July, to visit brother Jim, (Toronto) and cousin Jane, who I'll meet in Calgary but will visit at her new place on the shore of Lake Erie, and sister Jan who now owns our family cottage on Lake Kashawigamog in Haliburton. But later on this month I'll go with Jan to brother Tom's pad in Kelowna.
I'm going to tour a new apt on Monday so sister Sue has been getting me ready by fixing my own menu, shopping list, in order to fix all my own meals. I have been in training, as I have my own kitchen here so I can fix my own breakfast, lunch and dinner.
This month I was also lucky to fly to LAX. I stayed with my friend Sandy Munro and family to attend my step daughter's wedding in the valley. Ok , it wasn't pretty but I stood up and danced. She is a teacher of autistic kids and her new husband, Brian, is a teacher too and has two really sweet girls from a previous marriage. Abigail & Emily. Funny how I was attracted to her dad because of her and he was not even invited, but I sat next to her brother Matt, and had a terrific time.
Then I was fortunate to go up to Santa Barbara and stay with my good friends, Scott and Cathy. While there, I was fortunate to have a great dinner with Rene Kelly and her husband Jeff as well as a visit and dinner at the home of Pam & Brett Ettinger. Scott and Cathy took me in the harbour I used to go on a stand up paddleboard, lots of time for that, but this time I went in a kayak that I propelled with my feet. I still don't have enough movement in my shoulders to paddle much yet, but I managed to tune and play (albeit lousy) at least I could still read the music, and the physio's are working on my fingers and shoulder.
I have a meeting on Monday of an apt with some assistance. Then if I do ok and like it. I will move into a place of my own. I lost my glasses in LA but I'm really glad I'm ok to put in my contacts at night and take them out in the am and see perfectly all day!
I am very fortunate to have a girlfriend here, Laura Vittery , whose girlfriend Robin, donated money to fund my electric chair which should be here this week. That really helps me because with it, I can take the Handy Dart. I have been taking lessons on driving it inside and out, which I thought were kind of dumb, but if I can swallow my old pride, I will move about with confidence. In Sue's house there are just some places that are too small, like the bathroom. But hopefully we'll turn it down enough that it will help me inside and out.
Well, it is time to make some lunch and then Kate and I are going on the Seaview trail. I hope you have a great month and hopefully next month I'll take a move on my own and keep learning!

Another month goes rippin' by!
Blog #5
Well another month zipped by and five months I've been writing this blog. What can I say but it is really different living here in Vancouver instead of Ponoka. I was sure living in a hospital was terrible but learning this new world is equally challenging. Now everyone especially Sue and family have been very positive and nice but it is me figuring some things out. A few weeks ago Sue was wonderful to take me it to The Brain Injury Conference. "What are the consequences of my accident?". I always thought it was all physical. I couldn't walk, ride my rollerblades, sailboard, kiteboarding let alone play the sports I always have played: Golf, tennis, biking, skiing, XC skiing heck I enjoyed walking or running for fitness and even though they aren't wild sports, I'll be very lucky to do any of these! There weren't many brain injured people there in wheel chairs but their stories of forgetting to turn on the washer after loading it or that they had to use post it notes for everything! Forget being an elite athlete and I've always been an entrepreneur that makes up her own work and some how it always worked out. Now, I am in a benevolent country, but I'm not ready to roll up the carpet and do nothing! But what? My partner Bruce is good to keep some projects and he is good to set it up with people who have their wits about them to work with me and luckily I started things on Xventure before my accident but it will be a challenge because I would like to make sure I take the time to go to all the therapists and keep up what is needed to rest so I can heal but it sure is a great project and good people to work with to start back. Well I like and have confidence in the Physical Therapists as we are going to them 3 times a week and there is a physical therapist assistant who comes to the house 2 times a week. She has me cooking, standing to do dishes and practicing transferring into different chairs and couches. I like their method of taking the time and practice but not using crutches that I'll have to learn different methods and tools to access them.
I've made plans to go to LA to see my step daughter Sara who is getting married and I'm lucky to have my girlfriends Sandy Munro of Texana and Cathy and Scott Armstrong of Santa Barbara and I've got a good friend from our time in Banff that I'll visit with (Pam Fergusen now Ettinger) also in Santa Barbara.
As great as it is I am going to have to move into a place of my own, with help. So hopefully it is close to Physio, cause then sister Sue and Kate can visit and I'll have to cook, clean, do laundry, manage my schedule, all of which I can do but it will take all my time and I'll have to manage it.
Sister Sue and I are going with the physio group to UBC to speak to Physio's in training about brain injury (I don't know much but i've got a bad one)
I would like some company (ok wild parties!) no, just friends who want to visit or go for a coffee, like I did a week or so ago with Cam and Leslie Landell and we ran into a good friend, Kim King. I am hoping that physio will loosen my shoulders up so I can do a yoga class or some other type of exercise. Calm down grass hopper but geeze! Anyways it is one of those things "hurry up and wait". Anyways I am very thankful that I can read, write and turn on the washer when it's full. Small feats....but it could be worse and now there are so many challenges. For those in Van-groovy who have some extra time and would like to help. As it takes a whole village. Worry not, we'll be able to find something appropriate to do as Sue could re-appropriate her time and wow is it fun! Ok, you don't have to believe that but, if you're interested, good looking, fun, and have a talent...say fund raising, let me or sister Sue know. Pegola2@hotmail.ca or
Msuerowan@hotmail.com. It's not a big deal but when I live on my own, I'll need some partners in crime. Thanks for reading and keeping up to date with my struggle and look for the changes I'm planning next time...

Hello blog followers!
Welcome to my 4th blog note and for those just joining us, welcome, and be sure you let us know you are following so I know who I am writing to. Plus cousin Jane is good to teach me all parts and teach me to handle this project on my own.
Welcome, it's hard to believe that today is one of those sunny days where even I get warm with the sun coming in the window, like a warm spot where the dog or cat likes to soak it up! My world is forever unfolding. I guess I'm lucky to be alive and I am working on getting walking which takes a lot of the physio time as they are using different technique called Bobath which is radically different than what I learned at Ponoka and I think it is very good.
I'm dragging Sue back to the pool here, and she helps me with replicating what I am learning in physio as well as just relaxing in the hot tub. Ok, I just get warmed up when Sue turns red in the face. Oh well I'm trying to regulate my body temperature which helps me get my muscles ready to work.
I know I fought getting an electric wheel chair but I am trialing one now and I use it to get into a position so I can stand to do things, and I have much better posture than when I foot propel in my manual chair. Because I have this chair I stand up to brush my teeth and use the bathroom sink, which was a nice change as I could never see and felt like a grommet just hanging on. I am able to help prepare meals and stand to wash dishes. Get a cloth rinsed and clean the counter.
I am getting my old computer setup by cousin Jane and hope to store my documents like what Steve Jobs envisioned on a cloud. I really enjoyed the biography of Steve because he really did think differently and I was quite surprised how many Apple products I actually owned. But I'm glad to have my iPhone and I will connect it to a service and then I will have to use that bugger.
The truth about my transformation is that I feel like I am waking up and learning about what is new and unfortunately what is not.
I learned a week or so ago that a strong character from Portland who was very connected and committed to starting the CGWA. He skied a lot with CMH heliskiing. He, Fred Nobel, has been fighting ALS or Lou Gerhig's disease and is having a tough a time like I'm having, but I am at least getting better. It is dam slow, one step in front of the other and I learn from people like Fred Nobel as this is the biggest project I have ever taken on! In my second life, cause the first one was loaded, but never with a project like this. My goal for this year is to gain some flexibility and independence by capitalizing to take the great help Sue has provided by learning to walk and to safely transfer myself from chair to chair.
I have a got friend Sandi, Al Safrata's wife, to help me with yoga and stretching. I did a lot of yoga in Calgary, and Hood River,
so it is a good place to start. I can't do much but I'm getting ready and today she came, I had forgotten how to breathe deeply. My friend, Andreas Yuen has a good yoga studio here so somehow some way it will happen and it will help me with my recovery!
I am really enjoying my time at Sue's house and having daily interaction with Max & Kate. I know I am a lot of work and I won't stay here too long but it sure beats the Hospital!
I'm going to start to work (cause I like to focus) on new ideas and I'll be quite challenged but will have help from my good friend Arlene and my friend Bruce helping me. It seems the good idea I was working on Xventure resorts hit a chord with the waterpark people. It's funny how things go full circle because I heard on OPB radio while driving between Hood River how this small town in WI had a good summer business but the winter, spring & fall was really slow. Well that sounded like Hood River. So I did a lot of investigating and came up with a healthy and better concept than the original concept of the waterpark. So, enter a radical healthy water-type park that will appeal to the corporate people during the week and the Families on weekends and the summer. So, it can be busy all year long. I proposed that to the Port Commission of Hood River and The Dalles but...Whatever... I think there are some interested people now, so the timing just wasn't right. We'll see. It is nice to have something and Bruce and Arlene are great to support my efforts!
Well that is about all there is except if there are friends out there that are interested to give Sue a break, I would love some time out on the weekends. It could just be a coffee and visit. Eventually I will get to working out at the gym just below (Glen Eagle) or the West Van pool, I have a membership at both but don't yet have a routine to follow. Anyways, I am really enjoying learning and staying in West Van and plan to have a VoIP on my IPhone. You can email me at pegola2@hotmail.ca or call me at Sue's 604-921-9922. I'm not too great on the phone but I will get better. Thanks

My New Year Message
It is the New Year, a fresh start and a change to make new starts that will hopefully end with promising results. The Christmas Season brought lots of positive changes as I got out of Ponoka or the Centennial Centre as Cindy-loo Rand picked me up after 1.5 years and took me to over night at her house in Invermere. That night Lesley Beatson drove up from Rossland to her friends in Fairmont Hot Springs and Cindy-loo drove me to meet her in the morning, then Lesley and I drove to Rossland which was the spectacular home to my friends and family for my 50th b-day! Lesley got a new house since I was there last. My friends Scott, Cathy & their daughter Torri came up from Santa Barbara and Lesley's two kids, Cole & Samme, came home from school, so we had a full house, lots of shortbread, good healthy food and for once, I didn't drink any booze!
I was given the experience of riding a sit-ski which was an experience I never had so I realized what I liked about skiing...It was the Freedom it offered.... It wasn't cruising down the hillside but getting the choice of where to go. Later, Lesley and her kids, took me and the sit-ski on the snow covered streets where I was actually making some turns of my own. Lesson learned! I was looking to do it myself and on the mountain, the instructor thought I was looking for a thrill instead of "learning"to do it myself! The fun I had was down at the Trail Pool. I spent a fair bit of time in the hot tub but I also was treated to a life jacket, and eventually a mask and snorkel. I had the freedom of sculling with both arms and pulling my feet underneath me and standing up things they didn't try with me at the hospital but I at least gained some balance and that is something Sister Sue will crack the whip and I'll enjoy!
Right now I am living with sister Sue as my medical coverage takes 3 months to transfer from Alberta to BC. I'm really glad that her husband and teenagers let me live with them as I am quite happy here! Sue has a bunch of theories including massage, but it is not the relaxing kind. But if I get better I'll be very happy! So, let's hope 2012 is a stellar year for you and me! My best to you and your family!
Let's dream big!
Peg
